I just finished rereading Martha Grimes’ ‘The Black Cat‘ the twenty-second installment of her beloved Inspector Jury series. I particularly enjoy this series because Grimes has managed to raise her Scotland Yard detective above the stereotypical detective we see in most mystery/crime novels. Jury is a character who grows and changes with every book of the series. He doesn’t stagnate in his own eccentricities or perceptions, which is what sets him apart from other characters in the genre. Grimes’ well crafted and well thought-out story lines, combined with Jury’s character development, make this book series well worth the time and effort invested in reading the series.
